The Jim Austin Computer Collection

Cray EL98

No 3.

This is the 3rd Cray EL98 in the collection. It came from Dan Williams in London.

Its larger than the others as its made up of a main cabinet with the main processor in and another i/o cabinet holding more disks.

Spec so far:

6 x Segate 3Gb disks

12 x ST43401 2.9Gb Fast Wide SCSI disks.

24 x Hitachi DK 516-15  ESDI disks.

The machine came in a pile of parts. After some time and some great help from the Cray team in the US its now almost booting. Cray sent me a new plug that was missing for the machine. This tells it that its a two cabinet Cray. For some reason it was missing. It lives in the main console box.

Looks like the machine came from DRA at Hasler, Plymouth.

The system had to be taken to bits to move it. Here are the photos of the system in parts.

14th May 07: I am in the process of putting the machine back together (14th May 2007). A few bits need mending (cables etc.) but it all looks OK at the moment.

28th May 07: The machine is now in one piece and seems to boot, just.

This is the system. The disk racks are at the front.

This is the console to start the machine.

This is one of the two racks.
